Undecided when it comes to God, religion and church? Where does that leave your kids?

Kathleen saved one of her most personal topics for her very last show. When she made the following post on FB, the responses flooded in and she realized she was not alone with this issue:

“As adults, many of us are still groping when it comes to God and religion and spirituality. So we do a little of this and a little of that. But I’m starting to wonder where that leaves our kids? They end up with a whole lot of nothing in particular.
The lack of dogma I can definitely live with. But the lack of ritual? Hm…(I’m personally struggling with this as a mom.)”

It took months to find just the right guest to discuss this loaded question. Dr. Michael Kaplan, Yale professor and child/adolescent psychiatrist (and father), joins Kathleen in a controversial discussion about exposing kids to religion, ritual…and inspiring them with a sense of something greater than themselves.

Practical and stirring advice.

Michael Kaplan, M.D. is Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale Child Study Center with a special interest in bringing concepts of child development and child psychiatry to educators and parents alike. Dr. Kaplan currently teaches and trains students, residents, and fellows at Yale University Medical School as well as lectures widely on these topics. His expertise is in providing mental health consultation to public school systems and is the consulting psychiatrist to the Foote School and Choate Rosemary Hall.

Freedom from Sugar

Toxic, addictive, abused, everywhere. This week’s guest—Dr. Robert Lustig, one of our nation’s top endocrinologists—explains the hard facts about the impact of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and yes, even fruit juice on the liver, heart and waistline.

Dr. Lustig shares the science showing, “Fructose is as toxic as ethanol…without the buzz.” And explains that through processing, “God made fructose hard to get, man made it easy.” Because of this, our entire food supply is loaded with the stuff he calls poison. He goes on to share the recommendations for you and your kids.

Learn the difference between fructose and sucrose, why no amount of exercise will take off the pounds and why thin folks are as at-risk as the overweight. In short, Fructose is the greatest single culprit resulting in all the diseases we call metabolic syndrome—heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes.

Robert H. Lustig MD is a professor of Clinical Pediatrics, in the Division of Endocrinology and Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF. He graduated from MIT, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Lustig has authored over 85 research articles and 45 chapters and is the Editor of the volume “Obesity before birth: maternal and prenatal effects on the offspring.

<itunes:summary>Freedom from Sugar Toxic, addictive, abused, everywhere. This week’s guest—Dr. Robert Lustig, one of our nation’s top endocrinologists—explains the hard facts about the impact of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and yes, even fruit juice on the liver, heart and waistline.

Dr. Lustig shares the science showing, “Fructose is as toxic as ethanol...without the buzz." And explains that through processing, "God made fructose hard to get, man made it easy." Because of this, our entire food supply is loaded with the stuff he calls poison.

Tiny Houses

Everybody is doing it… downsizing that is. And it’s more than just a hip fad. It’s more like a new way of life and a return to modesty (and creativity) in how we design, build and live. Kathleen is joined by architect and author, Mimi Zeiger, who offers big insight on this move toward smaller living spaces.

In her books, Tiny Houses and Micro Green Mimi presents a strong case for how to thrive in a more sustainable space. She discusses the radical and exciting influences in structure, building materials and overall design.

If you’ve been wondering how to break free from the cookie cutter confines that have defined the housing market (and our mortgages), then you’ll dig this show.

Mimi Zeiger is the author of Micro Green, New Museums: Contemporary Museum Architecture Around the World and Tiny Houses (graphics by over, under). She founded loud paper, an architecture zine and is a contributing editor at The New York Times, Dwell, Azure, and Architect. She holds a MA from Southern California Institute (SCI-Arc) and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and has taught at California College of the Arts and at SCI- Arc.

Sir Ken argues that this isn’t a luxury, but an absolute necessity as we stare down our own lives and the global issues of our times.

If our recent show on highly sensitive people was an a-ha moment for you (either because you’re highly sensitive or know someone who is) then you know how challenging it can be to be in relationship with someone on the opposite end of the spectrum. This bonus clip from Kathleen’s interview with Elaine Aron could help bridge the communication gap.
