'Pick of the week' can be a movie, new or old, a book, a poem, a song, an article...really anything related to the arts that might entertain us or light a fire in our bellies.
An excellent “60 Minutes” segment exposing Big Pharma’s massive influence on Capitol Hill. Through its powerful lobbying group and promises of high paying positions to lawmakers who vote in their favor, the pharmaceutical industry tends to get its way regarding legislation having billions of dollars of impact on its bottom line.
Watch this feature to see how this played out with the Medicare prescription drug bill. (you will not believe your eyes) As taxpayers, do we really want to continue to subsidize explosive pharma profits? There is no doubt we need some sort of plan in place to ensure the elderly and poor get the meds they need. However, this particular bill and the way it was passed is a sham and should serve as an embarrassment to the pharmaceutical industry and our legislative process. What if? What if more of this government spending was earmarked for prevention…programs that actually help people get and stay well? (nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, awareness about toxin exposure) Unfortunately, such voices can rarely be heard over the roar of pharma’s well paid lobbyists. Watch 60 Minutes Segment HERE
