Several months ago, I interviewed Tony Schwartz, the author of The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working (one of my favorite books of 2010). Yesterday, his team posted these quick and practical ways to stay focused in this age of distraction. It was a good, kick-in-the-jeans reminder for me as I sat there surfing Google, skimming my email, and wondering once again why I wasn’t getting anything done:
- Try shutting off your email completely for at least one hour a day, and devote that time to a significant challenge you’re facing.
- Decide the night before on the most important task for the following day. Try to do it first thing, for 60-90 minutes without interruption.
- Do one thing at a time. Research shows that when we multitask, we retain less and have and have more difficulty applying what we learn.
