Say no to test tube food

October 18th, 2010

It’s Non-GMO Month

It seems like October is everything month when it comes to awareness campaigns (domestic violence, breast cancer, vegetarianism).  But there’s another important one we didn’t want to let slip by either.  It’s the first ever Non-GMO Month.

Jeffrey Smith, a leading expert on the dangers of genetically modified organisms, shares everything you need to know about GMOs in this eye-opening interview with Kathleen.  And with the majority of our food currently being produced from GMOs (yeah, that’s 85-plus percent of corn and soybeans we’re talking about), he also discusses how we can fight back.

Jeffrey explains that all we need is five percent of consumers to reject genetically modified products before major companies will react and change. “A company isn’t going to have a low-GMO product to respond to a finicky consumer, they’re going to have a NO-GMO product,” he says. Which is exactly what happened in Europe–European customers demanded better, and they got better/safer products. Those same companies however are still dumping their GMO foods on the U.S., because we’ve been too complacent to speak up.

If we demand GMO-free, and stop buying the other crap, companies will respond to protect their bottom line.

Here are two really great resources for finding GMO-free products (because some companies are already getting it right): The Non-GMO Project and the Non-GMO Shopping Guide.
