Kathleen shares critical advice for self-published authors. (As someone who receives thousands of pitches/books from authors all over the country.)

  1. Wow Kathleen – this is some TOUGH love for some….but completely necessary. I’ve been fortunate to have my writing errors pointed out to me by my readers (the beauty of online publication….you can change it!) but for print or for perhaps ebooks this is money well spent. After watching this I found this great discussion on editor costs http://bloodredpencil.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-does-editor-cost.html At 2 to 4 dollars a 250 word page, it seems like a cost well worth it.

  2. Kathleen,

As the host and producer of a Day Long Salon on Self-Publishing and Self-Promotion, I am smiling, nodding in agreement and chuckling at (as Antonio says above), your tough love and fierce truthful opinion on good editing.

    It’s so true.

We are not entirely great at self-editing our own creations. We begin to lack full objectivity and our mind fills in the corrections someone else would see in a flash.

I’m all for self-publishing that is well-crafted and that requires investing in editing as well as some design assistance if we cannot do all for ourselves.

As the Writing Coach and Marketing Specialist I am, I thank you for your willingness to share your word of advice.

    “Authentic Writing Provokes” everytime!

Your authenticity rocks! Keep up the great work you do in the world being YOU!

P.S. Kathleen Whalen, thank you for pointing Kathleen and her “Show” out to me some time back. Great to see you on “TV” and self-publishing yourself via all the multi-media communication channels so readily available. God bless technology…

  3. Don Burrows says:

Episode 2 – “Kiss Sugar Goodbye”

Good morning, Kathleen. My name is Don Burrows and I am part of a Reticient Bloggers group in Redmond, WA.

Deborah Drake is our leader and she sent your self-publishing link to us to think about for the ice breaker at our session tomorrow. Interesting post. Thank you.

After I watched Episode 1, I checked out Episode 2. Thank you VERY much for that. Years back my doctor told me I was almost diabetic, and I made an immediate about-face on my diet and embraced Sugar Busters.

I can relate to your three weeks to shake the cravings; here’s a trick I used very effectively to help me get by them.

Since Doritos and chips in general were my downfall, I would walk up and down the chip aisle and rather than seeing the word “Doritos” or “Ruffles,” I trained my subconscious mind to see the work “Death.” Most folks don’t willingly reach out their hand and grab a plate of “Death.”

With practice and commitment, I got to the point that I could walk by all that, as well as my all-time favorite, Boston Creme Pie. No problem.

If you like this, feel free to share with your audience.

    Keep up the good work.

    Best regards,

    Don Burrows
