School daze…how do we fix our failing schools?
Born to a teenage mother in the 3rd generation of poverty, Dr. Steve Perry had all odds against him. Today, he is a brilliant and inspiring educator who is the founder and principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut. His bold, no-excuses approach has yielded stellar results—Capital Prep is one of the only low-income urban schools where 100 percent of the graduates go on to attend a 4-year college.
In this inspiring interview, Dr. Perry reveals the secrets of his school’s success, from its small size and core mission (social justice and college prep) to the “triple threat” requirements for teachers (teach, coach, advise). Lamenting today’s system of “educational malpractice,” Dr. Perry speaks his mind on everything from vouchers (a must) to the teacher’s union (a bust). This passionate voice from the educational trenches is a real wake-up call to fix our public schools.
