In search of a little perspective? Daily survival on the Alaskan tundra.

Imagine life without basic amenities. No paved roads, scarce hot water, and you can forget about flushing toilets. Now throw in sub-zero temperatures, and you have a sneak peek at life in “the bush” of Alaska.

Kathleen interviews Sherry Pederson, a Wellesley-educated wife, mother, teacher and writer who left the suburbs of Connecticut to live in the remote plains of Alaska. Sherry shares some of the everyday challenges of life in the arctic tundra (clean water, waste removal, extreme weather)—as well as the many life lessons and rewards.

Sherry Pedersen grew up in Farmington, Connecticut. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Wellesley College and moved to Eek, Alaska (population 300) to teach elementary school. She currently lives in rural Alaska with her husband, one-year-old son, and eight sled dogs. The family will welcome their second child in March.
