Factory farms? There must be a better (and more humane) way…
Most of us agree that all animals deserve to be treated humanely, even those raised for food. Sadly, this is not the case for the millions of animals on “factory farms,” huge agribusinesses where living creatures are nothing more than a commodity. Pigs, chickens and calves in particular are subject to especially abusive practices, forced to spend their lives in cages so small they can’t even extend their limbs or turn around.
Kathleen interviews Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society, about the state of our food production and what we as consumers can do about it. This is not only an issue of animal rights and human decency—our food safety is in question when animals are stressed and pumped full of antibiotics due to overcrowded conditions. Wayne also discusses Prop 2, a very important vote for farm animals in California—and what you can do to help.
Wayne Pacelle is the president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). During his tenure, he has spurred major growth for the organization, which is now the nation’s largest animal protection organization with more than 10.5 million members and constituents.
